The previous evening we had driven back to Smolyan, where we needed to deal with some more admin tasks. Like a few days before, we had time to spend the early part of the morning at the Smolyan Lakes ('Smolyanski Ezera'). I was particularly keen to try and get some better photographs of male Yellow-winged Darters, having only ever managed good photos of the females before. We began at the lower lake at 7:45am, and quickly began to see our first of 12+ Yellow-winged Darter. The majority were female, but soon we spotted a couple of red males. Over the course of two hours they proved challenging to photograph well, The following are the best I managed:
The other Odonata we recorded by the lake were Four-spotted Chaser, Common Bluetail and Blue Featherleg. A couple of good butterflies were a Weaver's Fritillary and a Balkan Copper. A little later in the day we had a surprise Hungarian Glider just outside the front of the hotel. Once we were done in the town we drove back across the mountains to Gotse Delchev, to the same hotel we had stayed at two nights earlier.
