European Bee-eater ~ Eastern Rodopi, Bulgaria

In the evening of the first full day of our trip to Bulgaria, our drive back to the accommodation from our main site of the day came to a sudden stop when we ran into a party of 15+ European Bee-eaters. There were clearly a huge number of flying insects on the wing in this specific spot, and there were Bee-eaters down on the road hunting and perched up feeding in the roadside trees. They remained active for well over an hour, before it got too late in the day for them and the number of individuals began to decrease. Remaining in the car and photographing out of the window allowed us to get quite close, certainly closer than would have been possible without the use of the car as a hide. Eventually, once the activity on the road had stopped, I crept out of the car and sat in an adjacent meadow, where Bee-eaters were regularly flying overhead. I attempted a few flight shots, but it was really too late in the day now to have suitable light for flight photography. Here are a few of my best results:
