Balkan Pond Terrapins ~ Eastern Rodopi, Bulgaria

One of the highlights of the second day of my trip to Bulgaria was finding a small population of 7 Balkan Pond Terrapin (Mauremys rivulata) living in the trough of a water fountain. Initially they were very anxious, and darted back into the algae-filled water as soon as they noticed us. But with a bit of patience just sitting beside the trough, they eventually clambered back out to bask, and were then less worried by me and my camera positioned a metre away. They're quite characterful animals, and rather comical when you just see their heads and large eyes poking out from the water's surface. I attempted to get a small variety of photos from different angles, and am reasonably happy with the results. The biggest issue to contend with was the harsh light from the sun, which caused unpleasant shadows and highlights when not positioned directly behind me.
