Chukar ~ Eastern Rodopi, Bulgaria

The main highlight across our two visits to the Dolna Kula Valley was undoubtedly the exceptionally good views of Chukar we were afforded. The scree slopes in the valley here provide the ideal habitat for the species, but views tend to be quite poor as they often keep up high above the road, which is the only accessible part of the valley. However, this year it seemed that a male had set up a territory lower down, with what we presumed must be the same individual singing from elevated rocks both just above the road and just below. I had always thought them as shy birds, but this male was happy to continue giving off its territorial call while we approached along the road in the car, and then later to begin calling from a rock just above from where I was stood photographing an Eastern Olivaceous Warbler. Perhaps it had learnt that these rocks were safe, inaccessible for humans or cars. The result was that I was able to take a nice range of photos, with a variety of light conditions, angles and backgrounds… by some distance my best to date of this species.
